About Us

St Nicholas Greek School

St Nicholas Greek School Yarraville aims to maintain and enhance the use of the Modern Greek language in a contemporary Australian context.

Our History

Opened over four decades ago to meet the needs of the Greek Community of Melbourne’s West, St Nicholas Greek School was grown under the care of the Late Fr Anthony. A passionate man, driven to preserving and developing the Australian-Greek community and identity, Fr Anthony acted as both Parish Priest and the School’s first teacher, offering the first classes to the School’s three only students.

Under the leadership of Fr Alexandros, the School saw the erection and establishment of a new education and community space allowing the school to grow and develop, giving way to a wider extra-curricular program as well.

Today, St Nicholas Greek School continues to serve the Inner West Greek Community. Currently with 140 students from Foundation to VCE and 12 educatorsthe School is fully equipped to practise contemporary teaching methodologies in modern and technologically equipped classrooms. Having earned the title of an Official Microsoft Education School, our School continues to offer Greek Tuition to generations of Australian-Greeks with the help of our dedicated and passionate teachers, a rich cultural program, and online classrooms which complement traditional face-to-face lessons.

Our Curriculum

St Nicholas Greek School is dedicated and driven towards enhancing and developing Greek Language skills and bilingualism to all our students. While we aim to provide a progressive sequence for students to develop their language skills and cultural understanding through a program aligned with the Victorian Curriculum, we also strive to instil in every individual a sense of belonging, community and love for their Australian-Greek identity.

Our program includes a rich variety of extra-curricular activities including singing, folk dancing and participation in intrinsically Greek events such as our Primary School Annual Kite Festival. In the classroom, our dedicated and caring teachers are chosen for their experience, skills, and willingness to develop their professional teaching skills. Together we strive to incorporate the most up-to-date teaching methodologies and a rigorous use of ICT to always allow students to think broadly about their education and develop a nuanced understanding of the importance of their special identity as Australian Greeks; reminding students of the strong connection between Australian and Greek culture.

Our students are regularly tested, and they and their parents and guardians are asked for feedback so that we can continue to reflect and refine our approach. Our School Curriculum is founded and developed on the skills and interests of our students and themes and topics reflected in the Modern Greek Curriculum. Regularly offering information sessions to parents and guardian, and professional development classes to our teachers, allows us to continue to offer the best Greek language education that we can.
